To start our celebration of Picture Book Month, I want to share some suggestions I read recently on twowritingteachers.wordpress.com. The article discussed the connection between reading and writing and encouraged parents to have their children write their own books.
Children have such vivid imaginations and love to draw. Why not supply them with a cozy corner for drawing. Fill that corner with a basket of books, a clipboard and plenty of colored pencils and crayons. Encourage them to let their imaginations soar and produce their very own Picture Book from their drawings.
Another fun source for free writing fun is a weekly Email from Sias Studios, http://www.Ryansias.com. Ryan is a wonderful illustrator who sends out weekly emails that contain original art projects to encourage children to invent their own stories and to make art without boundaries.
William Faulkner once said, “Read, read, read. Read everything – trash, classics, good and bad…..”
Don’t forget to help celebrate Picture Book Month, I will be giving away once a week a copy of my book Before I Was Born. Just leave a comment on the importance of picture books to you to enter the random drawing.
Happy Halloween – hope your day is filled with treats!
Before I Was Born is available on Ebay, on my Etsy Store BernadettesBooks, or contact me directly via Email. It is a fun book to spark imaginative conversation with your children and it makes a wonderful baby present.
We all know how important it is to read to our children. And the very first books that are read are picture books. What would childhood be without the irreplaceable pleasure of sitting on a loved one’s lap anxiously awaiting the turn of the page.
Picture Book Month is a literacy initiative that celebrates the joy of print picture books during the month of November. You might want to go to this site http://www.picturebookmonth.com and take a look at all the fun things going on there during November.
To help celebrate Picture Book Month, I will be giving away once a week a copy of my my book, BEFORE I WAS BORN. To enter to win a copy of my picture book, BEFORE I WAS BORN, just leave a comment on the importance of picture books to you.
On this site you will find ideas about picture books – the importance of reading to your child, picture book suggestions, ways to make reading a fun past time, picture books as gifts, picture book showers and occasionally tips about writing a picture book.
I started this blog because I just finished self publishing my own picture book, “Before I Was Born.” This book was an outgrowth of many conversations that I had with my grandson, Lucas.
I was so taken by his imagining a place where he could do anything, anytime but also at the same time wanting to be a little child with his parents. So I wrote “Before I Was Born”. But, after I wrote it and had all the beautiful illustrations done by Carissa, I wanted to help other children to discover new worlds and new ideas through reading.
So, I decided to partner with a wonderful organization, Story Storks (STORYSTORKS.ORG). The beautiful people in this organization deliver a book and a packet about literacy to mothers of newborn children in local hospitals. So the profits from “Before I Was Born” will go to Story Storks to pay forward the happiness I have received from writing the book.
“Before I Was Born” is beautifully illustrated in midcentury style. It is an appropriate gift for a boy or a girl and has been illustrated to be multi racial. It has a page for the recipient to put their child’s picture and another page for personalization.
“Before I was Born” is available at my Etsy Store – Bernadette’s Books.
I hope you will take a look at it and consider buying it for yourself or as a present. And I hope you come back to read some of the fun stuff about literacy, parties, books and writing that I plan on posting.
For two weeks in November, McDonald’s plans to distribute children’s books in an epic happy meal promotion.
From November 1st to November 14th, the fast food company will give out 20 million copies of the following titles: The Goat Who Ate Everything, Deana’s Big Dreams, Ant, Can’t, and The Dodo Goes to Orlando.
Reading is Fundamental will partner with the fast food company as well, sharing 100,000 Happy Meal Books with “children who do not have easy access to books.”
A new DK eBook will be released and available for download at HappyMeal.com on a monthly basis throughout the rest of 2014.
Books are essential for inspiring children to explore, dream, and achieve, yet far too many children do not have this basic resource. That is why I am donating all the profits from the sale of “Before I Was Born” to Story Storks. If you want to help children who do not have easy access to books, please consider buying “Before I Was Born” for yourself or as the perfect gift. “Before I Was Born” can be purchased at my Etsy Store – Bernadette’s Books or on EBAY.
